[Letter] Jan.28,1887,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Jan. 28, 1887, Smith College.

My Dear Mr. Giddings,
            I want to consult
you on a little matter in
which I have confidence in
your judgment. Please
exercise that good judgment
with all the severity which
the case may require. I
have had the feeling that
the last chapter of the
Phil. of W. is the one that
has misled persons most
as to my position on the
relation of ethics to economics.
I would like to lessen the
danger of misapprehension.
Moreover I would, for an
especial reason, like to guard
as carefully as I can against
the impression that I agree
with a certain class of
workmen in disparaging the
Church. Messrs Ginn & Co. are
thinking of printing a
cheap edition, with some
idea that it may find a
circulation among working men.
Now these men as a class
do not need to be stirred up
against the church. I have
sketched a paragraph or two
with a view to appending
them to the end of the
last chapter as it now
stands, not omitting anything
already there. If it is not
asking too much of a very
busy man I would greatly
like your criticism of the
paragraphs, and also your
view as to the advisability
of appending anything.

     Your Very Truly,
          J. B. Clark

P.S. I shall hope to have a
little talk with you before meeting.
