[Letter] Feb.10,1887,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Feb. 10, 1887, Smith College.

Dear Mr. Giddings,
          I have just copied
the 'Profits' article, and
such is my nervous haste
and folly that I send it
to you without waiting to
let it cool. Be merciless
with it, and send it back
if it needs retouching. You
will see that it amplifies
one of my analyses in 'Phil.
of Wealth', also that it gives
the view I tried to express of
the nature of legitimate profits
above "wages of superintendence."
Applying the analysis to
profit-sharing leads to
questions I would greatly like
to talk over with you.

   Yours Very Truly,
          J. B. Clark

P.S. Of course I have
no occasion to touch on
fluctuations of price or cost.
For my purposes I would
rather regard them as stable.
In this view does profit-sharing
do more than to allow the
men to cam a part of the
wages of directive labor?
