[Letter] March 5,1887,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

March 5, 1887, Smith College.

Dear Mr. Giddings,
         I agree as to time
of meeting. We had better
not change it. My first
impulse was to do it, but
I incline strongly the
other way, in view of all
interests. I shall write
to one of the ladies today.
 I sincerely hope
your little girl will escape
scarlet fever. Two of Mr.
Cable's children have it, in
a light form. At best it is
something to be avoided
if possible.
 Concerning title: I
have more confidence in
your judgment than in my
own, and only intended to
raise the question of a
possible change, in full
expectation that what you
decide will be best. I think
some form like the one
which I suggested, by way of
illustration, can be devised
which will be shorter.
'A Journal for the discussion of
topics connected with Labor and
Capital' would exceed the present
sub-title by one word of two
letters only, and would have less
letters in the aggregate.
Retaining 'Monthly' would give
them more letters than the
present sub-title.
Substituting 'Discussing' for
'the Discussion of' would
shorten the title still more.
Thanks for the list of names.

        Yours Very Truly,
                   J. B. Clark
