[Letter] May 4,1887,Hill&Wainwright,Attorneys-at-,Northampton,Mass. [to F.H. Giddings]

May 4, 1887, Hill & Wainwright, Attorneys-at-Law,
    Northampton, Mass.

Dear Mr. Giddings,
                You were elected
not merely nominated as member
of council [of the A.E.A]. I should have been
only too glad to have deserved
all the credit of it, which you
accord to me; but - the
facts are as follows; Prof.
Richmond Smith was chairman of
the committee, and of his own
motion, he proposed your name.
It was much better that the
election should come thus, as
a spontaneous tribute to the
merit of your work, than that it
should come through me. I
will not deny the intention to
suggest the name had it been
necessary; but that would have
been no more than others
would have done who heard your
paper.
 What shall we call the
little book? Shall it be
Distribution Under Modem
Conditions, or words to that
effect? I think we had
better broaden its scope as you
suggest, if so be that we do
not amplify the scale of the
work too much for our physical
well being. I want the thing to
be done very easily. Can we
with due regard for the
needs of vacation, finish it by
about Sept.1? Would it be
well to write to Ginn & Co.
asking what they would like to do
about it? They may say we must
own the plates. Shall we say no to
that and try someone else?

      Yours Very Truly,
           J. B. Clark
