[Letter] June 20,1887,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]
June 20, 1887, Smith College.
Dear Mr. Giddings,
Do you know
Jos. H. Walker of Worcester?
He is author of a book on
'Money', a banker,
manufacturer, and politician.
I asked him for some
statistics which he said he
had concerning business in
Worcester, showing that
"manufacturing profits do not
exist." He meant that
dividing manufacturers in
one dep't into three classes
allowing each 5% as
interest, the middle
class will make 0, and
the lowest one will just
lose as much as the
highest makes.
My request draws out
the enclosed letter. It
is very kind. Shall we
ask him to come?
If he comes I shall
try to have him return
to Northampton with
me for the night.
I have given him some
idea of the work we are
doing. Thanks for the slip.
Don't work as you are doing.
Yours Very Truly,
J. B. Clark
