[Letter] Dec.6,1887,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Dec. 6, 1887, Smith College.

Dear Mr. Giddings,
          I am the man
who does not dance even
when you pipe his own
tune. The impression made
on me by the preface is
that it is excellent, and that
I am likely to spoil it by
changes that I may suggest.
I also was impressed with
the idea that it would be
better yet if it were shorter,
and if - this is the
point above referred to -
if it did not contain so much
of the very matter suggested
in my former letter. It
seems to me to spend too
much of its space on my
part of the volume. I
doubt, moreover, whether we
can in a preface so describe
the group system as to give
a clear idea of it to an
uninitiated reviewer.
 My draft is a mere
suggestion. Treat it, please,
as you wished me to treat
yours. Restore the original
form, or cut and change
ad lib. I may have
made it blind by shortening
it, and by alluding to
a group system that I
do not attempt to describe.
Would you advise an
analytical table of contents?

      Yours Very Truly,
             J. B. Clark
