[Letter] Dec.16,1887,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Dec. 16, 1887, Smith College.

Dear Mr. Giddings,
      The Conn. Bureau of
Labor Statistics is preparing to
investigate business profits,
and Mr. Biddle, of that office,
a man whom I know, has
written to me asking me
to prepare a set of questions
to be circulated among business
men to draw out the information
required. I have replied that I
distrust my ability to make
questions that will accomplish
the result since the men will
be too suspicious or at least too
reticent to afford the information
actually desired in reply to
direct questions. Still I have
agreed to do what I can in
the way of suggestion. How
would something like the
enclosed list of points do? If
you can easily suggest
improvements please do it. I
know that you will find things
to suggest. The work is certainly
of the utmost importance,
but it will take superlative
tact to accomplish it.
 I find that a club
is to meet at my house on
Monday evening (supper)
so that I cannot hear Mr.
Bliss40. I think it will be the
first time I have been absent
from Association since it
was found. I am very sorry. I
have often cut this club for
the sake of the Association;
but at my own house I cannot
do it. Will you kindly make
my apologies to the brethren?
Also to Mr. Bliss?
 I am making the
analysis of my chapters.

      Yours Very Truly,
             J. B. Clark
