[Letter] Jan.10,1888,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]
Jan. 10, 1888, Smith College.
Dear Mr. Giddings,
A queer little
complication exists in the
fact that Mrs. Hotchkiss
and Biddle were to have
visited the club at the
last meeting. As they
were coming partly to see
me I thought it my
duty to tell them I should
be detained from that
meeting, and give their
cards to you. They deferred
the visit apparently till
Jan. though they did not
write definitely to that effect.
I suppose they can still
come, though I should not
wish myself to invite them.
I know Mr. Biddle quite
well and think I can
make things reasonably
straight with him as
far as the visit is
concerned. If you think
you can so explain the
matter of the address as
to make things right
with Mr. Hotchkiss I shall
not offer objections. I
do suppose the Cornell speech
is liable to be in print before the
March or April meeting.
Yours Very Truly,
J. B. Clark
P.S. The allusion to printing the
Cornell address means that I have had to
work into it the substance of matter,
that is promised for printing. I might
change the form, and keep back the address
as it stands until after it had been given to the club.
