[Letter] Jan.14,1888,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]
Jan. 14, 1888, Smith College.
Dear Mr. Giddings,
I send proof
by this mail, having been
once through it all, and
made a note or two.
Would a slightly smaller
type for the sub-title be
better? I do not feel sure
that it would, but raise the
question. I rather want it
to have an antique look, as it
has, and think the style of letter
excellent. I do not know
whether the phrase 'Copyright
by J. B. Clark' means that
( ) Ginn & Co. have taken out
the copyright in my name.
If not it had better be
copyrighted in both names
and yours added on the
page. I will write to G. & Co.
on the point.
I am glad with
you at the appointment of
your friend to the presidency of
Union College. If collegiate
work will not take you to
an inaccessible distance
from me I shall rejoice
very heartily, as you may well
imagine, if you enter the
ranks of my fraternity. I
shall give you the first grip.
That would be better in the
end than the editorship.
I am very glad the Hotchkiss-Biddle
imbroglio seems in a fair way to be
straightened; though it has cost you an
amount of trouble that I regret. I hope you
may meet these gentlemen. Shall we
specially invite them to the next meeting?
That would be a trifle awkward, would it
not? Yet they intimated an intention to
come at some time.
Yours Very Truly
J. B. Clark
