July 26, 1888, Ludlow, VT. [Enclosed the business advertise-
ment from New York Life bearing an endorsement from
Republican candidate for President, Benjamin Harrison.]
Dear Friend,
How is this for
advertising? I filled out their
blank reply in the following
way - "Your circular with
letters of the two presidential
candidates received." Such methods
of advertising inspire anything
but confidence in the
management of the company that
resorts to them.
Heretofore respectfully yours,
J. B. Clark"
I don't usually go out of my way
to quarrel with anyone; but from a
great business company it really
strikes me this circular is too
much. It is moreover a
breach of good faith. It
suggests the question whether
they offered a special bait to
the two men, which bait
Cleveland, with his customary
dignity, refused.
Prof. Morse says he
will join me at Littleton
Aug. 6 for a little tramp.
I greatly wish you could
come also. Can you not
do it?
Yours Very Truly,
J.B. Clark
