[Letter] July 31,1888,Ludlow,VT. [to F.H. Giddings]

July 31, 1888, Ludlow, VT.

Dear Mr. Giddings.
         It seems to me a
copy of my reply to the last letter
from Miss Thomas may make the
situation clearer to you. Her letter
said it might affect their action
to know whether the reduced salary
would preclude my considering the
offer at all, at the end of the year.
In that case, she said, they might
prefer to appoint Prof. Jenks. My
reply is as follows -
 "Your second very kind
letter has reached me; and I
would say that while $250 or $500
per annum would of course be a
consideration, it would not be a
decisive one. I do not understand
that you desire a definitive answer
to the question whether a particular
offer would be accepted next year.
From my point of view there seems
to be a reason why it may be
desirable for all that the question
should remain open. I confidently
expect that, if Mr. Giddings goes
to Bryn Mawr, in any capacity
that will afford an opportunity for
his qualities as a teacher to make
themselves felt, the college will be
unwilling to part with him at the
end of the year. Aptitude for teaching
is one of his strong points."
 I then suggest that they
write to Miss. Bowles for
information as to teaching ability.
 I have informed Miss. Bowles
that I have referred to you.
What I know about the
situation is thus, I hope, fairly
clear -

         Yours Very Truly,
               J. B. Clark
