[Letter] Dec.17,1888,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Dec. 17, 1888, Smith College.

Dear Mr. Giddings,
          My back is better
and I am equal to a
reception if you on your
part would naturally attend
it in case I were not
coming or in case for any
reason we ought to attend
it in the interest of the
society. On the other hand
my inclination to substitute
for it a quiet evening with
you is as strong as ever.
Miss Bowles has not lately
been very well and I
suppose she will hardly feel
like going to the reception
after the journey. What I
most desire is a few quiet
hours with you, and at
present my idea is that I
had better accept your
kind hospitality for Wednesday
and Thursday nights. We
should, of course, lunch in
the city and dine there,
since we could not otherwise
attend the meetings, but the
long rides to and fro will
give a considerable amount of
time for visiting. Knowing
how full your house was to
be I thought that these
days would be as long a
visit as it would be well
for Mrs. Giddings to have
and therefore accepted Prof.
R. Smith's invitation to spend
Sunday with him in Brooklyn.
I frankly own I would
much have preferred remaining
with you over the Sunday.
As it is we shall have quite
a visit, and shall, as I
confidently hope get a
longer one in the Spring or
the Summer. Your friends
here will expect you there.
I fear by the program
we shall fail to get a
meeting of the Com. on Ec.
Theory. Would it be easily
practicable to meet Thursday
at 9:30 AM.? If
it would in the least
hurry your breakfast we
will find another hour.
I am all eagerness to hear
of the discovery in Distribution.

          Yours Very Truly,
                J. B. Clark
