[Letter] Dec.19,1888,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Dec. 19, 1888, Smith College.

Dear Mr. Giddings,
      I expect to be
able to reach a 3 PM.
train from N.Y. by
leaving here at 8:05
AM. Thanks for
advice as to time and
route. I am looking
forward to the visit
with great anticipation.
About Dr. Ely - I
hear from Dr. Patten that
there is a movement
to unseat him, and have
written to Dr. Patten
that I do not believe
there is any new
movement of that kind.
I personally think it will
be impossible to get
another man who will
work as Dr. Ely has done
without being paid for it.
If we can continue to
have his services I am
in favor of it, and am
willing to use my vote and small
influence in that direction up to
the point where it appears that it
will cause division of feeling possibly
more than that - in the association.
I expect to see Prof. Smith on the way to
Phila. and may get from him the full
facts.
 I sympathize with your feeling
about the omission of the name from the
Quarterly's list, only the case is so
flagrant as to convince me off hand
that it must have occurred by oversight.
I think you will have the editors after
you fast enough for more articles. The
notice of Prof. Cohn pleased them, as of
course it would. You remember his allusion
to "all the other articles in that review."

            Yours Very Truly,
                  J. B. Clark
