[Letter] Feb.12,1889,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Feb. 12, 1889, Smith College.

Dear Friend,
       Prof. Patten
suggests that, as you have
just tabulated all meanings
of Wealth you could
easily take, as your part
of the vocabulary work, the
tabulating of definitions
of Capital. I had suggested
Value to you. Which would
you prefer? Please act
wholly on your personal
preference, as no one has
any wish in the matter
except that some important
work be in your hands.
 I think, between us,
Miss Thomas was here after a
principal for the Bryn Mawr
school in Germantown. Miss
Garrett was with her.
 I have just rec'd
Prof. Böhm-Bawerk's book on
Capital and Interest, and am
eager to see how near he has
come to my wages and interest
law. Such is the selfishness of
human nature that I rejoice to
know that my theory was out -
by the public reading - before
his book appeared, so that
whatever points may be
common to the theories,
no one can say or think one was
borrowed from the other. I do not
now think very much is common to
the two; but I am eager to ascertain.
I find I read this kind of German no
faster than I did years ago. I have not
done enough of it to keep the wheels well
lubricated.

         Yours, Very Truly,
               J. B. Clark
