[Letter] Dec 12,1889,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Dec 12, 1889, Smith College.

Dear Friend,
        Gracious! I select
this as a mild and
available swear word. I
never was so driven with
work in my life, real
work at least, as I have
been of late. The last
type-written copy goes today
to Prof. Gide. The article
has 6600 words and
still does not contain
any of the ethical matter
that I at first intended
to make prominent in it.
I had to greatly condense
the paper, and that matter
was least germane to the
subject; so I took it all
out. Like a donkey I
have been lecturing at
South Hadley and at [Nore?]
as well as here. On some
days lectures have come
together in all three
places, making lively
times for me, with my
quiet habits. I am tired
and I will not do it any
more. My Quarterly article
will have to wait till the
June No. I look with
eagerness for yours, and with
greater eagerness for you.
When do you come to
Springfield? My mother has
been ill at my house
for several weeks, and her
sister is here caring for her.
She has arranged to start
for Florida on the 26th
inst. and I must see
her well on the way. I have
doubts whether she will be
able to travel quite so
early. Let me know,
please, when you come.
I wish I might have a
visit with you here and
that all might go to
Washington together. How
that may be we cannot
now tell. My mother seems
to be steadily though slowly
gaining.

        Yours Very Truly,
              J. B. Clark
