[Letter] Dec.19,1889,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

Dec. 19, 1889, Smith College.

Dear Friend,
        I write in haste
in answer to your very
welcome letter, that we
cannot go on the 26th.
My mother is still sick
and confined to her bed.
She has a nurse in
attendance on her, and
cannot tell how soon she
can travel. My wife has
a young lady in the
family assisting her in
care of children; so that
my household is of a more
patriarchal magnitude
than it usually is. I
have a very eligible lounge
in a comfortable study.
Do you ever sleep on lounges?
If you ever do I want you
to come early, before the
Econ. meeting and make
us a visit, or else stay
after the meeting and
do it. It will not cause
the least trouble or
disturbance. We are well
served in every way and
have lots of nutriment and,
such as it is, lots of
room. I can offer you the alternative
of a single bed in the room with one
of my boys in case the whole room
with the lounge is not quite
alluring. On no account, do I want to
miss the visit this time.

        Yours Very Truly,
             J. B. Clark

P.S. After getting off the French article I took a
long breath and decided to get up one for the Pol.
Sci. Quarterly for Jan. 1-15. i.e. March No. The
charcoal sketch was finished this a.m. Now carries the tug.
