[Letter] July 15,1891,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

July 15, 1891, Smith College.

Dear Friend,
       Near and yet
far! I was at Plymouth
for a few days of last week,
and had no idea you were
nearer than Philadelphia.
If you remain in New
England after Sept. 1st,
I hardly think I can let
you vanish without a
visit to us. The present
situation is this: my
mother and my second boy,
Alden, went by rail this
A.M. to Arlington, VT.
Fred and I were to follow
with bicycles starting
today. It rained, and looks
as if it meant to continue
raining all night. So we
are weather bound at
home. Our wardrobe has
already gone to VT. and
we are in bicycle suits. If
callers come we shall be
arrayed in an original fashion.
The rooms of the house are
in a state of supreme
confusion, for painters
and paperers are at work,
nearly everywhere at once.
My wife will see this through
and join us in about ten
days at Arlington, or
somewhere. I have never
been in that part of VT.
to remain, and think it
will prove pleasant, as it
will be new. The Plymouth
days were something of a
job. I went with no written
lectures, but got on better
than if I had had them. I
saved much labor by not
writing them, but concentrated
a part of the saved labor on
the hours of actual delivery,
and felt rather tired when
the thing was over. I have
one of the pneumatic tired
bicycles, that goes wonderfully
well on sandy roads, and has
a luxurious motion everywhere.
Whether the tire may not
give out and make me
trouble is a problem; but
for the saving of nerve tissue
I have risked it.
 What is your recollection
of the two topics to be treated
in the monograph promised
by the committee on Economic
Theory? Was it not value
and capital? How soon
ought we to redeem the
promise? Would it be well
to write to the Secretary of
the New English Economic
Association and suggest
cooperative work in definition?
My address for a short time
will be Arlington, VT. but letters
sent here will be forwarded.

          Yours Very Truly,
               J. B. Clark
