Sept. 5, 1891, Smith College. [Included a letter of June 11,
1891 from Giddings to President Walker on the A.E.A.
     letterhead]

Dear Friend,
       I wonder how
and where you are. I
have just returned from
Dorset where we had
a very enjoyable time.
I hope you are well
through with the house
difficulties. The last
thing that I did at
Dorset was to make a
reply to Walker's criticism
of my Distribution
theory. It was not as
sharp a reply as it
would necessarily have
been if he had left his
criticism in the shape
in which it first came
to me. I hope it will
make the fact clear that
the criticism does not
touch the theory.
 I have received a
letter from Mr. Katzenstein,
who is translating Knies.
He wants work, and I
wish I had it to give to
him. It occurred to me
that possibly he might be
employed to put through
some of the work of the
committee on Economic
Theory. He could look up
standard definitions, etc.
and save us a lot of
time, and so enable the
promised monograph to
materialize. We could not
personally pay much, and
are not authorized to
draw on the association's
treasury. Would the
investment of a few dollars by
ourselves to hasten this
work and save ourselves
from being turned aside
from other work be
a wise thing? Can we
in any case delay
much longer the issuing
of the monograph?
 Just now I am about
commencing a couple of
articles on Distribution for
the new British Encyclopedia of
Political Economy; then I hope
the book on Distribution will
get fairly in the works.

    Yours Very Truly,
         J. B. Clark

F. H. Giddings' letter of June 11, 1891 to President Walker on the A.E.A. letterhead, Bryn Mawr.

My dear President Walker:
 The enclosed correspondence ex-
plains itself. After conversation with
Professor Seligman (subsequent to the
date of his note) I became satisfied
that it would be well to recommend
to the Executive Committee an advance
of fifty dollars to Mr. Katzenstein, and
I hereby make such recommenda-
tion. Will you kindly return the
letters.

Very Truly Yours,
F. H. Giddings
