[Letter] May 2,1892,Smith College [to F.H. Giddings]

May 2, 1892, Smith College.

Dear Friend,
       Will you give
me your off hand
judgment on an important
question? It is a
secret as yet, by President
Gates' wish. I am
informally offered a
professorship at Amherst.
Work about 6 hrs. per
week I suppose.
Pay $3,000 per year.
I now get 2500 from
the college. I think I
can reserve time for
lectures at the Johns
Hopkins, by foregoing
the pay that the
university would give
me. They wish the
arrangement to go into
effect gradually, so as
to enable them to provide
for Dr.Tuttle. This is
good of them, and
in harmony with my own
wishes. On an
off hand judgment what would
you say? They want a reply this
P.M. but will wait a day or
two I think. I have more
confidence in your judgment than
in that of any other friend.

      Yours Very Truly,
           J. B. Clark
