[Letter] Dec.31,1892,Amherst.[on Smith College letterhead] [to F.H. Giddings]
Dec. 31, 1892, Amherst.[on Smith College letterhead]
Dear Friend,
The little
maiden's thanks for
the very pretty spoon
were conveyed, I
believe, in my former
letter. Mrs. Clark has
sent her own. Gift
and kind remembrance
were both highly
appreciated. "Marginal
increment" is good,
the short of it would
be Margie. I think
I told you that the young
ladies called her
Mary Constance, or
for a rich name
Polly Cori; also
scientific, you sec.
She seems likely now
to be called Helen
Converse, the latter
being Mrs. Smith's name.
The initial number of
the Chicago magazine
claims a great deal,
but -
I have a letter from
B. Bawerk in which I
understand him to say
that he is about to
publish in the British
Economic Journal, a
theory of the unit of value
somewhat like mine.
If so, I have the start
in time on this point
at least. What foolish
creatures are we, to
care for our personal
claims instead of caring
solely for the promulgation
of truth. Well, I
suppose we do care for
the truth, and perhaps
for that chiefly, with
only incidental care for
our relation to it. B. B.
says good things about
the theory.
Yours Very Truly,
J. B. Clark
