[Letter] February 16,[1894] [to F.H. Giddings]

February 16, [1894], n. p.

Dear Friend,
       Thanks for
the letter. I will fully
consider and write
again. You were right
in thinking the
Amherst salary is 3000,
with leave of absence
thrown in if I furnish
the assistant. The
working time at Bryn
Mawr would be eight
hours a week and at the
Johns Hopkins two hours
on alternate weeks.
The long ride would be
in my case a very large
factor. I said nothing to
Miss Thomas about
salary, and she may have
inferred that it was 2500.
The offer does attract
me, and I shall try to
give full weight to all the
pros in the case. At
present I incline to
think the scale will
turn in the other direction.
A sale of property has just been
brought to completion and then fallen
through; which makes the drop in salary
alone almost decisive. The raising of
hours of work from six to nine is a large
factor. Regard for Amherst is a very
large factor, apart from anything lately
done for me. All the same I value
your advice, and thank you much for
it. I expect to go to Hampton, Va. in
Easter; but this question calls for an earlier
decision.

       Yours Very Truly,
            J. B. Clark

P.S. I have spent
3000 on my
house and lot.
The cellar is
completed, with
drains, etc. When Miss
Thomas was here I expected
to make a large
sale of
property.
