[Letter] October[but probably August?]27,1895,Amherst [to F.H. Giddings]

October [but probably August?] 27, 1895, Amherst.

Dear Friend:
          In confidence
I must tell you
that Powers has
telegraphed from
Europe his resignation
of his position, in
order to take a
full professorship at
the Leland Stanford.
It is to be kept
quiet for a while.
They want some one right away at
Smith. Is your pupil
Crowell the man?
Have you anyone
else in view? I
have put them on
the table of some
men - Gray, for
example - but the
time is very short.
A Columbia man
could probably be
located there if we
were ready. I start for Franconia
tomorrow. Address Forest Hills
Hotel, Franconia, N.H. I hope
all is still well with you
and yours.

          Yours Very Truly,
             John B. Clark
