October 3, [1897?], 280 West 70th Street, [New York City].

Dear Friend:
          I have sent
a declination to Prof
Wilcox. Seldom have I
declined anything with
so much of regret.
There is time to appoint
a substitute, as the
service is one week from
Thursday.
 I do not care
to talk much of the
reason for the declination,
but to you I will say
we are dependent on
property in Minneapolis,
and the situation ( )
is worse than I expected.
Selling at all, and
renting for much of
anything, are alike
impossible. Till this
changes we are forced to
practice heroic economy.
I still hope for better
things in the future.

     Yours Very Truly,
        John B. Clark
