[Retained copy of an autograph letter, signed] 1816 March 5, Queens Sqaure Place, Westm[inster] [to] James Colquhoun
Queens Square Place, Westm[inster]
5 March, 1816
Some years ago, he believes about ten
Mr Bentham, through what channel he
does not precisely recollect, received a
copy of a small pamphlet (12mo?)
in French giving an account of the
then recently instituted Courts of
National Procedure in Denmark,
under some such name as Bureaux
de Conciliation, Reconcilation Offices.
The object of them was to settle law dis
putes without the intervention of professio
nal assistants. The pamphlet having
been borrowed of Mr. B. by a friend, was
not returned, being said to k lost.
Mr B. has long been anxious to re
place what to him was a treasure:
and is very desirous of obtaining more
copies of that same pamphlet, with
the addition of whatever others have
been written on that same subject by
the same or any other author, in
the same or any other language.
A[f]t[er] 1811, Mr B. was informed by
Col. Aaron Burr the American, that
the author of the plan was Mr
Dudene Luning, with whom the Col.
was well acquainted, and gave Mr B.
a letter addressed to Mr Luning for
the purpose of Mr B., corresponding with
him through the medium of Meessrs.
Luning, Gegel, und Co Merchnants at
Gothenburg. But by that introduction
Mr. B. did not at that time profit,
and now at so great a distance of time,
he knows not what changes may have
happened to render it impracticable.
He would with much thankfulness
defray all charges.
