17 April 70.
My dear Sir,
I have recieved
the proofs of your
evidence before the
Council Superiors do, &
return you my best thanks
for it. I have read most
of it with the geratest
pleasure and feel sure
that you have done the
greatest possible
service to the cause of
international money.
In fact your exposition
of the whole subject
seems to me admirable.
It is impossible to see
now when we shall
suceed in carrying the
scheme and I see great
difficulties in the way,
but it is possible that
some intermediate
plan might be found out
that all could accept
more readily that the
1 pc mint change.
I find that Dr. Fair
has been down here put
ting out a scheme for
a 25 shilling piece which
has some relation to
Chevalier's absurd scheme
of the gramme coinage
as however it is totally
impracticable there is
no need to say anything
more about it.
The Bank seem to be
quite aroused to a new
life & have been sending
me publication after pub-
lication. I presume that
they think by reprinting
this 'Coinage Controversy'
they have extinguished
Lowe & you & me and
every one else concerned
in the matter.
Yours faithfully
W. Stanley Jevons
P. S. Could you not reprint
or in other way make your
evidence known in England
I have hardly time to do much.
