[Letter] May 1, India House [to Nassau William] Senior
India House
May 1
My dear Senior
I am particularly
sorry as you will be
at the Club, that I
am under strong medical
recommendation not to
go out - and do not
myself think it prudent
to be out at night, having
some return of invitation
in the chest.
One of Dr Carpenter's
reasons for desiring the
Registrarship is that
his health and strength
require an easier life
in point of labour and
anxiety, than he has
had for many years past.
A writer's employment,
especially if it did not
require all his time
and thoughts, would at
present suit him best.
No doubt he would be
capable of many things higher
than the Registrarships, but
I do not suppose he has
any chance of obtaining
them. The fault in Burns'
case did not lie in making
him an exciseman, but
in not making him
something better.
Ever yours truly
J. S. Mill
