[Letter] 1830 Jan. 20 [to] a Lord / T. Rob. Malthus

          E[ast] I[ndia] Coll[egs]
                    Jany 20th 1830
   My Lord,
      Your Lordship is quite
right as to the part of week
in which I am generally dis-
engaged; but we have just begun
the term, and there are four
days at the commencement of
it, devoted exclusively to the
examination of the candidates
for admission, during which, the
presence of nearly the whole
body of the Professors is required.
I took the liberty of waiting
a day before I replied to
your Lordships letter, to see
if I could be spared: but under
the absence of two, from unavoidable
business, and the indisposition of
one, if not two others with very
serious colds, I fear that, I
could not leave the College
this week with propriety.
   I am extremely sorry it
should have so happened.
                 Believe me
                    my Lord
                 with great respect
                        truly Yours
                     T Robt Malthus
