[Letter to] Simon Sterne, May 20 1868

J. S. ミルのスターン宛自筆書簡

スターン（Simon Sterne,1839-1902)はアメリカの法律家で経済学者。ハイデルベルグ大学で学び、1859年ペンシルバニア大学法学部を卒業し、1860年ニューヨークで法定弁護士となった。1863年から64年にかけて the Commercial Advertiser のスタッフとなり、1864年アメリカ自由貿易リーグ(the American Free-trade League）の創立者となった。翌65年に Social Science Review を創刊し、1870年には「70人委員 the Committee of Seventy」の書記に選出された。著書に、 Representative Government and Personal Representation (Philadelphia, 1870)、 Suffrage in Cities (1878) Constitutional History and Political Development in the United States (New York, 1882; 4th ed., 1888) などがある。
この書簡は、文様が浮き出し印刷(emboss)されたレターヘッドであり、 Collected Works of John Stuart Mill に未収録の書簡である。
